As I stroll toward the vast, looming oval of what Nîmes calls the “Arena”, and what we know better as an amphitheatre, it’s surrounded by trucks packing up equipment from last night’s concert, part of its annual Festival. From mid-June to the end of July, this 2,000-year-old structure plays host to a range of musicians, including the likes of Sting, Norah Jones and yesterday’s performer: controversial rocker Marilyn Manson.
